The Hungarians

John Horvath was born in August 1848 in Petohaza, a village in Gyor-Moson-Sopron, Hungary. He married Anna Ivanciscs (born 1856 in Hungary) in 1873. They immigrated to the United States in 1889 arriving with their six children: Louis, Theresa (also known as Essie), William, Joseph, David and Rose. They settled in McAdoo, Pennsylvania, a small mining town in eastern Pennsylvania. Two more children would be born. My grandmother, Anna, was born in 1893, and Katherine (Kate), was born in 1896. That same year, Theresa married Gabe Bolla (or Gabor Bolla), also from Hungary, and they lived nearby. Gabor Bolla would sign the declaration of intent (naturalization) for my grandfather Joseph Bartha in 1914.

Three years later, in 1899, Anna's father, Francis Ivancsics, immigrates from Hungary. He is 66, widowed and lives with the family at 126 E. Blaine in McAdoo. In the 1900 census, his name is incorrectly recorded as Frank Evanchi. He is able to read and write but does not speak English. He is not found in the 1910 census. Anna also had at least two sisters and a brother who immigrated. They are Catharina Ivanscics Achs, who came with her husband John in 1889 just two weeks after the Horvath family. They settled in Ohio. Agnes Ivanscics Folyi came with her family in 1908 along with their widowed brother Ferenc. They made their home in Scranton, Pennsylvania.

In 1895, John Horvath becomes a naturalized citizen. He and Anna maintain the White Eagle Hotel. John and his sons also work in the mines. His occupation is carpenter colliery and Anna is a hotel keeper. Daughter Theresa (Essie) marries Gabriel Bolla in 1896, and they live nearby. Sons William, Louis and David marry three sisters, Elizabeth, Julia and Mary Nagy. These three families resettle in Connecticut, where the Nagy family lived.

Son Joseph marries Theresa Fekete in 1907. They have two sons, Stephen and Joseph, who are orphaned when Theresa dies in 1915 and their father in 1917. Louis, Essie and Kate help raise their nephews.

Daughter Rose marries Charles Kish in 1908. They moved to New Jersey in 1912 and raise their sons Alex and John.

Kate, the youngest, marries Paul Wargo in 1918 just one month before Anna's marriage to Joseph Bartha. Kate also helps care for her father. He is living with them in 1930. After the death of John Horvath in 1932, Kate and her family also move to Connecticut.

In 1918, Anna marries Joseph Bartha, an immigrant from Budapest, Hungary. He works for Verhovay Aid Association and later becomes their auditor. He has been widowed twice and has two daughters, Emma and Margaret, from his first marriage. Out of eight children, only two remain in Pennsylvania - Essie and Anna.

Anna and Joseph Bartha had seven children, but three died very young or at birth. Their children are Violet, Helen, Evelyn, and Gail. Evelyn Magdalena Bartha married George Morin in 1941. They had eight children.
