The Irish

The Irish families are Dillon, Montague and McCullom, and I know very little about them. My great, great grandfather is Francis J. (Frank) Montague. He was born in Ireland about 1829 and died in Chicago, Illinois in 1882. He married Catherine McCullom, who was also born in Ireland about 1833. She died in Chicago in 1905. I do not know if they met and married before or after coming to the United States. Approximately one million people immigrated from Ireland to the United States during the Great Potato Famine between 1845 and 1852. They came here in poverty during those years and worked hard all their lives.

Their first child, Sarah Montague, my great grandmother, was born in New York about 1852. The family moved to Chicago in 1858. According to census records, Frank became a naturalized citizen, he could read and write and he listed his occupation as wheelwright, wagon maker and blacksmith. They were early settlers in Chicago. The population at that time was under 15,000. Frank's blacksmith shop was in the area of the Great Chicago Fire of 1871.

Frank and Kate Montague had nine children: Sarah, Michael, Mary E., Frank, Jr., Margaret, Mary Jane, Kathryn, Henry and Lillian. Both Michael and Mary die in 1857 in New York at very young ages.

Their daughter Sarah Montague, born about 1852 in New York, married John Dillon, born between 1849 and 1855 in New Jersey. I have yet to locate actual birth records for either Sarah or John. Census information does state that John was born in New Jersey and that his parents were born in Ireland. I do not know the names of his parents or siblings. John is a carriage blacksmith. He died in 1926.

They have six children: Charlotte, Kathryn, Sarah (Sally), George, John Francis, and Royal Andrew.

George Arthur Morin, Sr.
Kathryn Dillon Morin
My grandmother, Kathryn Dillon, was born December 24, 1882 in Chicago, Illinois (died June 1972), marries George Arthur Morin, born November 23, 1878 in Danielson, Connecticut. They marry at Sacred Heart Church in Chicago on October 9, 1911. The Irish meet the French! Before marriage, Kathryn worked with her sisters in a hairdresser parlor and at the Chicago Athletic Club. George followed his father into the insurance business. They bought a home at 7525 Oglesby Avenue in Chicago where they lived until George received a business opportunity in Pittsburgh. They lived in Pittsburgh from the late 20s to about 1941, when George retired and they returned to Chicago. George, Sr. was ill for several years before his death on March 16, 1944.

They have three children: George, Jr., Rosemary and Robert.

George Arthur Morin, Jr., born August 29, 1915 in Chicago, Illinois (died December 31, 1978 in Phoenix, Arizona) marries Evelyn Magdelena Bartha, born November 14, 1922 in New Jersey (died June 19, 2014). Her parents are Joseph Bartha and Anna Horvath.  Joseph Bartha immigrated to New York in 1905. Anna Horvath was born in McAdoo, Pennsylvania in 1884 but her parents and six siblings immigrated from Hungary in 1889.
